45thAcademy Awards Show ~ hosted byRock Hudson.

March 27th, 1973

Remember when?    ( Read below: )

Grab a seat, buckle up, and hold on, cuz you are in for an amazing ride.

This item is a wonderful piece of movie history.

It is the actual script, plus two sets of revisions and the parking pass that Rock Hudson used and studied from when he was the host of the Academy Awards!!!

It is complete with Rock’s hand-written notes and corrections, plus a list of A-list names Rock jotted down. (Why, I don't know-- maybe to invite certain ones to the “after party”)   That particular writing is on the back of one of the 40 pages in this set.

It is just full of fun!

When you read this, you are putting yourself in the front seat of that evening, following along as each Superstar, larger than life, seems to glide onto the stage, one by one and in pairs.  You will feel as though you are standing in the wings, on the stage, right there with all the action.  As you read, you can just about picture the bright spot lights and all the television cameras looking your way. You will look out to see the faces in the crowd, most very recognizable, every one dressed in tuxes and evening gowns.   First class all the way.  Most were at home tuned to channel 4, NBC to see the festivities.          The show opens with Michael Caine already on stage, warming up the audience while winding down to Rock’s introduction.     Michael walks off.... asking aloud if Carol Burnett saved a seat for him.

The crowd roars!

Then...The vacant space left by Mr. Caine’s departure is soon full to the brim, overflowing, when Rock Hudson makes his way from the back to center stage with rounds of applause.   He enters in to a long monologue, seamlessly guiding his conversation towards the introduction of the first Academy Awards Nominees--- presented by Julie Andrews and George Stevens. The nominations are for “Best Director”.   Ms. Andrews & George Stevens bounce back and forth with dialogue, then blend effortlessly into the complete list of nominees. You can really tell the Pro’s!!!

You feel the drum rolllllllll...the envelope comes out...the actors fight comically about who gets to open it and who gets to read it.  Over the P.A. is heard...”And...the winner is.....”

THE CROWD GOES WILD!

As you read further along in this treasure of a script--- every bump met, around every corner, there is new talent---each gracing the stage to announce their category and nominees...

Finally... the winner!...

What is also neat is that with this script, you have all the lines given to all the co-hosts, and the other talented actors that are part of the show, not just Mr. Hudson’s.  Actors  such as Jack Lemmon, Liv Ullman, Roger Moore, Raquel Welch, Gene Hackman, Clint Eastwood, and more, besides, of course, the aforementioned!!!

So you are able to see and feel what  EVERYONE said!!!

Somewhere around the middle of the show, there is a break from the walk-on talent.  The lights begin to dim and an array of screens slowly descend from rolls near the ceiling.    Added to the venue (for further entertainment), stills. A myriad of other actors are flashing on the screens, moving around the room as if alive, timed with the telling of quick anecdotes synced with the changing of the shots.   You don’t know where to look and you don’t want to miss anything!!!    Some tell stories of days gone by, in remembrance of beloved late actors.  But, pictures are flashed also to celebrate some of the new, up-n-coming as well as the already established actors going strong in the world that was then.  It is a roller-coaster of memories and expectations!!! Reading this script, holding it in your hands, you feel, so strongly,  the flashing stills bouncing in and out across the huge screens.

Almost makes you dizzy, reading!!!

Within the script’s content is a listing of those stills being shown--- actors like Gary Cooper, Errol Flynn, Marlon Brando yelling “Stellllah”, Kim Hunter, Laurence Olivier, and many, many more!

Reading this, you feel as though you ARE part of the TALANT LINE-UP... or one of the CREW.....because these pages have all the production notes, direction, breaks & commercial spots!

They tell of sponsors, queues for applause, music, actors, photos, dancers, acts, curtains, etc...

Think of how many times Rock Hudson riffled through these pages... to remember his lines, or adding his own direction, annotations and corrections.   Many an actor has been known to have one of these in their back pockets at all times.                               And now you can too!

BONUS:

The parking pass included is in mint condition and is florescent lime-green, still bright and crisp as if it were printed just yesterday.  The other side of the two sided tape was never even removed!  And on the reverse, there are directions for the holder, “The V.I.P.”    This really gets you there!!!

SPECS:

There are three groups of pages:

           group # 1 consists of pages 126-156

group # 2  is a revision and has pages 140A-140E

group # 3 another revision has pages 145A-145D

There are at least six spots where Rock altered--- in his own handwriting--- some part of the script.

Pages: 143, 140B, 140C, 140D, 145C, 145D

It is extremely rare to find something with Rock Hudson’s penmanship!!!    Usually, he kept all his notes in his head.

 THERE’S MORE!!!

This script describes the introduction and how all the cast assembled on the stage together to do one huge routine.
And how they did another routine for the finale---singing and dancing to,
“You Oughta be in Pictures”.

I would love to show each and every page, but to read it without holding it would compare to someone giving away the plot of a film before you had a chance to see it.   SO, I JUST CHOSE A HAND FUL OF PAGES TO SHOW.

“Gotta be a live read.”

TIDBET:

"Here's an unexpected something that couldn't have been written into this historic 45th Annual Oscars: Actor Marlon Brando declined the Academy Award for Best Actor for his  performance in The Godfather, sending instead Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather, stating that the actor “very regretfully” could not accept the award, as he was protesting Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in films!

Remember that!!"

The whole package comes in a nice notebook with sheet protectors.  Very nice display!
